![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Wild Things takes place, pointedly so, in Blue Bay, an affluent, des-res yachting community in the South of Florida. As such, I can see it with far less rose-tinted glasses than some – and I suspect many male audience members may have needed glasses as a direct result of watching Wild Things! I have enough nostalgia for the 90s to appreciate the culture it depicts, but no nostalgia for the film itself. Viewed today, it’s an interesting experience. But, for whatever reason, I never got around to it. And the film itself had a surprisingly long shelf life thanks to three straight-to-DVD sequels between 20. Fast forward a few years into the new century and Wild Things stock was still high the lads mags continued their obsession, placing Denise Richards repeatedly on lists of the ‘Sexiest Women’, whilst Empire and the fondly remembered Hot Dog would still occasionally fill their pages with odes to the movie as it plotted the course of the movie’s stars, from Matt Dillon’s surprising comeback and Campbell’s return to the Scream franchise to Richards’ status of both Bond girl and Mrs Charlie Sheen. It’s drenched swimming pool sirens Denise Richards and Neve Campbell stared enticingly, provocatively out from countless magazine spreads, with the VHS being hot property in the local Blockbuster. In the laddish, Loaded-heavy era of the late 90s, Wild Things was everywhere. I’m not entirely sure why this torrid, twisty-turny thriller from (of all people) Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer director John McNaughton had passed me by until now it certainly wasn’t for the film’s want of trying. Plain and simple, this is NOT appropriate for kids. It’s really strange coming to a piece of pop culture from your youth for the first time almost twenty-five years after its moment in the spotlight, but that’s exactly what I have done with Wild Things, released to Blu-ray by Arrow this week. The only saving grace of this film is Bill Murray playing in his usual dead pan style that always makes us laugh, even when it isn't a comedy. Otherwise notable actors such as Matt Dillon, Kevin Bacon and Theresa Russell give wooden performances that make you question if they are actually good actors. But she didn't land this role for her acting ability. ![]() Richards, while pretty, can't act her way out of a paper bag, which is unfortunate. But the long and short of it is that this is a movie about high school students in as little clothing as possible doing very bad things. Some reviews called this movie lurid others simply settled for trashy. Girls in slow motion (washing cars even), crooked cops, oversexed high school girls, bad acting, terrible dialogue, repeated shots of wild animals ("wild things," get it), plot twist after plot twist, a catfight that turns into girl on girl action - this film has it all. This film employs every possible exploitation cliché. This scene is extremely steamy, hence it's fame. Denise Richard's boobs are seen a few more times throughout the scene, sometimes brief, other times for an extended period of time. After this they continue to make out, all the while being filmed. They continue to kiss before she removes the other woman's top, again only seen from the back. We briefly see Denise Richard's boobs again. The other woman undoes Denise Richards' character's bikini top and throws it away. The famous pool scene begins with the two woman kissing and getting into the pool. The other woman strips naked but we only see her back before the scene ends. Her large, ball shaped boobs are seen in detail during this scene for the whole time. For the next minute or so she makes out with the man while the other woman pours wine on her chest. Denise Richards' character is quickly stripped to her underwear and her bra is whipped off. There is a threesome between a man and two woman who at first kiss each other then kiss the man. Yes this movie has sex, and quite a bit of it too. There is quite a bit of swearing during the movie. This movie is famous, mainly for the pool scene but also for many other reasons. ![]()
